Knicks Blown Out By Heat Behind James, Wade

Thursday, February 27th, 2014

New York Knicks vs. Miami Heat

Post Game Recap

The Knicks came into the game with the best winning percentage against the Heat since the start of last season and left with it dropping a little bit. The Knicks were handled rather easily tonight by the two-time defending champs, getting blown out 108-82. It was tough to watch at points if you are a Knicks fan and it reached a low when they actually went away from the game for a bit in the fourth quarter to watch the end of a the triple-overtime thriller between the Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors. If the season hadn’t hit a low point yet, having a game switched over to a less than marquee match up like that should do it. The Knicks will be back at it again tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden to take on the Golden State Warriors.

-Player of the Game: Carmelo Anthony

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports
As it has been too often this season, Anthony looked to be one of the few Knicks to come in and try tonight. Anthony tried once again to put the team on his back tonight but he was unable to do it alone against one of the best teams in the NBA. Tonight Anthony finished with 29 points on 11-20 from the field, including 3-8 from the three point line and 4-6 from the foul line. He also added seven rebounds, two assists and one resounding block of LeBron James. He also had another highlight play with a dunk over James early on in the game. It was another efficient scoring night that has gone to waste as the Knicks got blown out.

-Positives

Tyson Chandler was the only other Knicks to have any real positive impact on the game. Chandler dominated a mostly undersized Heat team, terrorizing them on the interior while on the court. Chandler finished with 19 points on 6-9 from the field and a solid 7-8 from the foul line to go with 16 rebounds. Chandler made a living in the paint and caused some problems for the Heat rolling to the basket for alley-oop dunks and keeping plenty of possessions alive with six offensive rebounds. He joined Anthony as the only player to really show up tonight with some effort.

It is hard to believe but the Knicks were actually the aggressors for a lot of the game. They got at it on the offensive glass, grabbing 14 offensive rebounds for the game. They also got out some in transition, scoring 14 fast break points. They even got to the foul line more than the Heat, attempting 22 and knocking down 16 compared to 12-18 for Miami.

-Negatives

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports
The Knicks offense was listless outside of Anthony and Chandler. No one else shot 50 percent from the field and as a team the Knicks were able to only hit 37.3 percent of their shots. It got even worse the further away they got from the basket, as they made only 4-23 attempts from beyond the three point line, good for a putrid 17.4 percent.

The Knicks matched their poor offense with an equally as poor performance on the defensive end. The Heat ran their offense without much of a problem as the Knicks kind of let them do whatever they pleased on the offensive end. The Heat finished the game shooting 60.8 percent overall and 40 percent from the three point line. The Knicks had no answer for LeBron James and Dwyane Wade, who scored 31 and 23 points respectively, combining to go 23-32 from the field.

Tim Hardaway Jr. had quite possibly his worst NBA game to date. He couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat in the ocean, going 2-15 from the field and missing all eight of his three pointers. He also was taught a lesson defensively by Wade, who worked him throughout the night. Wade brought out his whole arsenal on the Knick rookie, whose offensive woes were augmented with the problems Wade caused him on the defensive end. He would finish the game with an extremely ugly -35 on the night.

Hardaway Jr. cannot be blamed solely though for what happened tonight to him defensively. The culprit is Mike Woodson, who asked Hardaway Jr. to guard Wade in the first place. It is no secret that Hardaway Jr.'s defense is not up to par defensively, so having him defend an All-Star and future Hall of Famer in Wade when he struggles to guard fringe rotation players makes little sense. Woodson also paired him for long stretches on the court with Amar’e Stoudemire, who has his own defensive deficiencies as well. When he saw things getting bad he let them get out of hand without making a move. Woodson also made head scratching moves by taking Jeremy Tyler out of the rotation and essentially shortening it to only seven players. He also played Shannon Brown as the third player off the bench, a player the Knicks signed Wednesday. Woodson seems to pick his rotations for the night out of a hat instead of how players perform.

Knicks Cant Hang With Heat, Ending Four Game Winning Streak

Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks

Post Game Recap

The Knicks were unable to end their home stand on a high note and continue their strong play against the Miami Saturday night as the Heat handled them rather easily, winning 106-91. After an embarrassing loss at Madison Square Garden three weeks ago the Heat were able to exact some revenge tonight. The Knicks played sloppy, unnerved basketball tonight as the Heat came ready to play. Some of the younger players looked overwhelmed against the two-time defending champion Heat and the veterans were unable to right the ship outside of a few short lived runs. Inconsistent play on both ends of the court eventually doomed the Knicks. On a night that biggest and brightest stars were at the Garden for Super Bowl weekend, the Knicks fell flat and their winning streak ended at four games. They will get back on the court Monday night in Milwaukee against the Bucks.

Player of the Game: J.R. Smith
Howard Simmons/New York Daily News

Smith was tasked with the biggest challenge of the night; slowing down the human freight train LeBron James. Smith tried admirably throughout the game to slow James down but was barely a speed jump for King James, who is two inches taller and listed at least 30 pounds heavier. With Iman Shumpert sidelined Smith drew the toughest defensive assignment. Even thought James was taking it to Smith on the defensive end, Smith was able to hold his own offensively. Smith shot the ball efficiently, going 6-11 from the field (4-7 3pt, 4-8 FT) for 20 points. He added two rebounds and one steal as well, as he played James as well as he possibly could and still delivered offensively even with all of the effort he was putting forth on the defensive end.

-Positive

When given the chance, the Knicks did shoot the ball relatively well tonight. As a team they shot 33-67 from the field (49.3 percent) and a strong 11-26 (42.3 percent) from the three point line. That makes it six games in a row that the Knicks have made at least 11 three pointers in, going 4-2 over that span. When the Knicks knock down three pointers they usually win; just tonight they were unable to get everything on the same page.

Kenyon Martin was able to get back on the court tonight and once again the Knicks were at their best while he was playing. Martin was the only Knicks player to get double-digit minutes to finish with a positive +/- ratio. Martin was able to control the paint while he was in the game and brought the confidence and intensity to the defensive end to get the Knicks back into the game. Martin’s stats won’t blow you away, as he scored four points, grabbed two rebounds, and had one assist and two blocks, but the Knicks always seem to play better when Martin is in the fold.

Tim Hardaway Jr. once again put on a show offensively with Shumpert sidelined. Hardaway Jr. made the most of the extended minutes once again, pouring in 17 points on 7-14 from the field (3-7 3pt). Hardaway Jr. once again did not produce much more in the stat sheet, grabbing only one rebound, handing out one assist and getting one steal. Hardaway Jr. can score with the best of them and once he improves other areas of the game he will continue garnering more playing time.

-Negatives

On the brightest of stages playing at MSG James has dominated and he did the same Saturday night. James put on a show for the Garden faithful, scoring 30 points, pulling down eight rebounds, hanging out seven assists and getting six steals. James did whatever he wanted to the Knicks tonight, much like he has done throughout his career as he teases Knicks fans every time he visits about what could have been. James continued his dominance over the Knicks in his career as he has the third highest scoring average of any player against the Knicks behind only Michael Jordan.

Howard Simmons/New York Daily News
Dwyane Wade has struggled with injuries throughout the season and many people think that his career is close to ending. Tonight he may have changed some people’s minds. Wade looked every bit like the Wade of old tonight, scoring 22 points on 10-15 shooting from the field. He also grabbed four rebounds, had four assists and two steals on the night to round out his stat line. It may be a coincidence but the best games that Wade has put together this season have come against the Knicks and Pacers, two of the more high profile match ups Wade and the Heat will have throughout the season.

The Knicks defense gave more than Santa Clause on Christmas tonight as they did nothing to slow the Heat down. The Heat got whatever shot they wanted and plenty of open shots around the perimeter. On the night the Heat shot 53.9 percent (41-76) and destroyed the Knicks in the paint. On the night the Heat scored 48 points in the paint, continuously getting easy baskets to keep the Knicks at bay. In the second half they outscored the Knicks 24-8 and started the half with a 14-2 edge in the paint. The Heat got easy baskets while the Knicks fell in love with jump shots with nothing coming easy.

Knicks Knock Off Defending Champion Heat

Miami Heat vs. New York Knicks

Post Game Recap

The Knicks look to finally be getting back on track as they pulled off an impressive victory against the Miami Heat Thursday, winning 102-92. This is the biggest win of the season for the Knicks as they were able to knock off the reigning champs in Madison Square Garden. The Knicks roster has been dealing with the flu bug as only four players were healthy enough to practice yesterday but the whole team came out ready to play today. With the victory the Knicks have won three in a row and four of their last five in the regular season against the Heat. They will look to continue their winning streak Saturday night against the Philadelphia 76ers at 7:30 PM ET in Philadelphia.

Player of the Game: Carmelo Anthony
Jim McIsaac
Against his biggest rival and good friend LeBron James, Anthony showed up once again to help the Knicks get a huge win tonight. Anthony matched up with James throughout the night and was able to limit him because of the great team effort that was put forth by everyone on the court. James was forced into six turnovers as the Knicks made life as difficult as they could for him throughout the night. Anthony led the Knicks with 29 points (12-24 FG, 3-8 3pt, 2-3 FT), eight rebounds, five assists and two steals. Anthony’s efficiency on the offensive end is important when the Knicks play tougher opponents like the Heat and he did a good job getting into great positions to score tonight.

The guard play had been lacking throughout the early part of the season with Raymond Felton struggling through injuries and Iman Shumpert struggling with his shot. Tonight both were exceptional. Felton, in his second game back from his hamstring injury, scored 13 points and handed out a season-high 14 assists. Felton got into the paint at will against the Heat and was left open multiple times on the perimeter, taking advantage by knocking down jump shots. Shumpert continued his torrid perimeter shooting, knocking down 4-7 from the three point line, all of which that came in the third quarter. He also added nine rebounds and three assists to go with his 12 points. Tim Hardaway Jr. and Toure’ Murry gave the Knicks some energy and exciting minutes off the bench, punctuated by a put-back dunk by Hardaway Jr. over Ray Allen.

Amar’e Stoudemire gave the Knicks quite possibly his best effort of the season; he played so well Mike Woodson stuck with him down the final stretch of his game, leaving Kenyon Martin on the bench. Tonight Stoudemire dominated the glass, pulling down 11 rebounds and shooting extremely efficiently from the field, going 7-12 for 14 points. Stoudemire held down the scoring for the second unit tonight with J.R. Smith essentially being benched by Woodson.

Andrea Bargnani was able to score when given the opportunity which helped the Knicks immensely. With so much attention being given to Anthony, having Bargnani knock down shots early in the game helps immensely. Bargnani scored 10 points in the first quarter to set the tone and finished with 19 on 9-13 shooting from the field. He stuck to what was working tonight as he attempted no three pointers, the first time in his career he didn’t attempt at least one playing 35+ minutes. He also added five rebounds and some good defense on former teammate Chris Bosh, who was held to 3-10 shooting for the night.

The offense was pretty sluggish for the Knicks in the first half but they got it going in the final two quarters. The Knicks were able to outscore the Heat 59-44 in the second half as they got it going from the three point line. The Knicks started the game 1-11 from the three point line but knocked down eight of their last 13 attempts and shot 63 percent overall in the second half. Also, for a team that usually lives and dies by the perimeter shot, the Knicks dominated a good Heat defense in the paint. The Knicks were able to get easy scoring opportunities en route to 52 points in the paint.

Mike Woodson catches a lot of heat in these post game recaps but you have to give credit when credit is due. Tonight Woodson thoroughly out-coached Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. It was an admirable job by Woodson to get this team ready tonight as he was unable to even have a half hearted practice yesterday as the Knicks only had four healthy players able to take part in practice. A lot of the Knicks players are ill because of the same upper respiratory Tyson Chandler is suffering from. The biggest surprise and best decision Woodson made was benching J.R. Smith. Smith was fined $50,000 for his shoe untying tactics and Woodson finally made a stand by benching Smith tonight. Woodson would not comment on the matter but it looks to have been a clear message being sent to Smith that if he doesn’t straight up his act he will not be a part of this as the Knicks showed tonight they can and will play well without him.

-Negatives

For the first time all season it could be argued nothing should go here. The Knicks put together their best all-around game of the season as everyone stepped up and did their job. Only one Knick, Hardaway Jr., had a negative +/- and the Heat only had one player, James, finish positive with a +1. The only negative from the game is how often Bargnani was switched onto James, but he did an admirable job whenever put into the tough situation. The big thing the Knicks need to concentrate on is how they come out Saturday against the 76ers. It is easy to get up and come out to play against one of the top NBA teams but that cannot be said when facing lower tiered teams. The Knicks win tonight against the Heat would mean nothing if they come out and lay an egg against the 76ers Saturday.
